As Philippine reduces its restrictions, events have been slowly getting back into the radar, especially on occasions which we celebrate with our loved ones, like on Father’s Day last June 19, 2022. It has always been a tradition to treat our dads on this special day, and there is nothing like going out, and watching a live performance, led by one of the oldest orchestras in Asia, the Manila Symphony Orchestra.
In honour of all the hardworking dads of our life, MSO presents to you, “Papa Mia”, featuring performances from the Manila Symphony Orchestra, Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra, MSO Music Academy and the Makati City Youth Orchestra.
It was a night of amazing performances comprising of 132 performers, in the newly-furbished Samsung Performing Arts Theatre, Circuit Makati. The hall was completely filled with audiences, ranging from audiences of the performers, music enthusiasts and families who wanted to celebrate this festive day, eager to witness an array of symphonic prowess.
The show kickstarted with the introduction of Ms. Corazon Alvina, MSO Board of Trustees Member.
First part of the concerto was spearheaded by the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra, playing their rendition of three songs, Divertimento in F by Wolfgang Mozart, Concerto Grosso no. 12 by Georg Frederick Handel, and the tradition folksong, Leron Leron Sinta.
This is then followed by For Good from “Wicked” by Stephen Schwartz played by the MSO Music Academy Voice Students.
Right after this, Mr. Jeffrey Solares, executive director of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, gave his messages of gratitude to everyone who dropped by, and talked about the Manila Symphony Orchestra and its past achievements which what makes the group such a symphonic force.
The performance continued with “The River Flows in You by Yiruma” and another folksong, “Chu-Ay” performed by Piano and Hard students, and teachers of the MSO Music Academy, conducted by Denzel Abarquez.
To conclude the first part, members of the MSO Music Academy Suzuki Violin Ensemble, Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra, and the Makati City Youth Orchestra played renditions from Books 1 and 4, accompanied by their teachers.
Second part of the concerto comprises all members of the Manila Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Jeffrey Solares. The group played their renditions of Atin Cu Pong Singsing, a folksong arranged by Ryan Cayabyab, Symphony No. 5, and First Movement by Ludwig Van Beethoven. Then followed by “O Mio Babbino Caro” by Giacomo Piccini accompanied by Iona Ventocilla-Borja’s Soprano, and Tango “Por Una Cabeza” by Carlos Gardel with Solo Violinist, Jeanne Marquez.
Of course, what a way to commemorate Father’s Day but to play themes from 007, including Mission Impossible, and as a Finale, a Mamma Mia Medley.
Truly, it has been a night to remember for everyone who watched and supported one of the country’s most active artistic institutions, and we hope to see and continue to support the development of young Filipino talent.
