“Five Break-Ups and a Romance” is a romantic-drama film that aims to elevate the traditional Filipino romance genre to a new and more mature level

“Five Breakups and A Romance” serves as my inaugural voyage into the creative world of director and screenwriter Irene Emma Villamor. Her masterful script effortlessly harmonizes with the movie’s awe-inspiring cinematography.

Just when I believed I had witnessed every possible facet of video call conferencing in narratives set against the backdrop of the pandemic, this film presents a heart-wrenching scene where the two central characters exchange a solitary word – “hey.” This single word manages to convey a myriad of emotions, encompassing sadness, anger, frustration, confusion, and even compassion. All of this is conveyed through nothing more than close-up shots of their faces as they appear on their mobile phone screens.

Alden and Julia not only share an undeniable on-screen chemistry, but their acting abilities also resonate in perfect harmony.

“Five Breakups and A Romance” will hit Philippine theaters beginning Wednesday, October 18th.
